Planning a trip out that way soon. It’s a bucket list trip for me. How is the dispersed camping in the San Juan’s?

I just went up that trail where you guys got on the Alpine loop last Friday. Their were some technical spots on the switch backs for a relative novice overlander like me😊. I ended up smashing my gas tank skid plate, started smelling fuel, and thought I had a leak and headed off the mountain. Tank looks ok, I don't see any leaks, so I'm not sure where the smell is coming from.
